During her time at Morgan Stanley Maria supported a team of four senior Financial Advisors, servicing the portfolios of their domestic and international ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) investors. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley Maria worked in Client Services at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Maria is RG146 compliant and has completed recognised industry studies including the Synthetic Series 7.

Digby is Managing Director of Blue Sky’s New York office and is responsible for building Blue Sky’s business in the United States.

Digby is a senior executive with significant experience originating and executing infrastructure and private equity investments globally. Prior to joining Blue Sky, Digby established AMP Capital’s New York office with a focus on sourcing and executing investments across North America. Digby has over decade of investment experience across debt and equity, and has originated and managed investments across North America, Europe and Australia. Digby’s investment experience covers the power, utilities and transportation sectors. Prior to AMP Capital, Digby worked at Access Capital Advisors and Allco Finance Group in New York and Sydney focused on the origination, execution and management of infrastructure businesses.

Digby holds Master of Commerce degree (Sydney University), and Bachelor of Commerce degree (Sydney University) and a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment (The Financial Services Institute of Australasia).

Nancy holds a degree in Accountancy and is an Associate Member of CPA Australia.

Stuart is the Investment Manager of Blue Sky Residential Asset Managers where he oversees the purchase, ongoing management and sale of residential property assets across a number of the Blue Sky Funds. Specialising in both management rights and freehold motel assets, Stuart works closely with the operations manager and the onsite managers across all assets within the Blue Sky management rights and motel funds.

Stuart has a strong accounting background with over 10 years’ experience in various accounting roles, working in both public practice and commercial positions.

Stuart holds a Bachelor of Commerce/Laws from the University of Queensland, is a Chartered Accountant, Tax Agent and is currently studying the REIQ Real Estate Course.

Michael is the Investment Director for Blue Sky Water Partners.

With over 15 years direct agricultural management and investment experience, Michael has designed, deployed and managed large scale agricultural investment portfolios for a number of institutional investors. Previous responsibilities have included Managing Director of Warakirri Agricultural Trusts and General Manager of PrimeAg Australia Limited’s Ag Fund. Michael has continuing broad and deep relationships with agribusiness networks and is the Chair of the USQ National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture research group.

Michael holds a Master of Science from the University of London, as well as a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of Queensland. Michael is a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Sarah works across the Distribution and Finance teams at Blue Sky, and is primarily responsible for fund reconciliation processes. Previously, Sarah was responsible for the fund accounting and finance administration for all the Private Equity and Venture Capital funds.

Sarah spent 4 years working in the Cayman Islands for Citco, a hedge fund administrator where she was a senior fund accountant for a Toronto based Hedge Fund. Since returning from her time in the Cayman Islands, Sarah has had fund accounting roles at QSuper and QIC before starting at Blue Sky in October 2013. Prior to her time overseas, she worked in the Business Services division at BDO.

Sarah is a Chartered Accountant and has a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) degree from Queensland University of Technology as well as a Masters of Applied Finance from Kaplan University.

During his time at KPMG, Bryan advised on several transactions across a wide variety of industries including financial services, healthcare, education, media, telecommunications, logistics, agriculture and industrial services.

Bryan also spent 2 years in KPMG’s Private Enterprise team, providing accounting, tax, auditing and advisory services to a range of large private companies.

Bryan holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Business, has completed a Masters of Applied Finance and is a Chartered Accountant.

Andrew has over 20 years of experience in corporate advice and finance and has been responsible for private equity and alternative assets coverage for two leading investment banks out of London and Sydney. He also has extensive experience in leading M&A and debt and equity funding for SME’s in Australia.

Having joined Blue Sky in January 2013, Andrew leads Blue Sky’s Sydney office and is head of Blue Sky’s capital market activities. Andrew is also the lead portfolio manager for the Alternatives Fund.

Andrew holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws and has been a member of the ICAA since 1994. Andrew is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee and the Remuneration and Nomination Committee of the Company.

Daniel previously worked as a senior associate at Sparke Helmore Lawyers and as a lawyer at Norton Rose Fulbright Australia, in the Corporate M&A teams, in both Brisbane and Sydney. In those roles, Daniel advised on a wide range of venture capital, private equity and M&A transactions, as well as providing general commercial advice.

During this period Nick worked across a broad range of sectors including consumer goods, retail, e-commerce, mining services and trade distribution. Before Catalyst, Nick spent three years with Ernst & Young in the mergers and acquisitions group.

Nick holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland, and a Masters of Applied Finance from Queensland University of Technology.

Ben previously worked in South-East Asia as an early employee for Lazada, a now billion-dollar Rocket Internet e-commerce company. Sam’s experience in the Financial Markets extends over more than twenty years. He has worked in the debt, corporate advisory, equity capital markets, private wealth management and property funds management areas. Sam brings his extensive experience working with boutique and Private Wealth businesses, Private Banks, Investment Banks, HNW and Family Office investors. Most recently he was a Director at Queens Parkland Pty Ltd focussed on SMSF, portfolio management, and micro capital raisings and formerly Business Development Manager at property fund manager Fortius Funds Management Pty Ltd.

In his role at Blue Sky, in addition to our wholesale investors Sam is responsible for building relationships in the private wealth management, broking and advisory market in New South Wales. Sam is based in Sydney and has joined Blue Sky to help achieve our next level of growth.

Most recently he was the Queensland Relationship Manager for Genesys Wealth Advisers and prior, the Queensland State Manager for Perpetual Ltd.

In his role at Blue Sky, Shane is responsible for building relationships in the Australian financial advisory market with a particular focus on Queensland key corporate accounts. Shane is based in Brisbane and has joined Blue Sky to help drive the company’s next stage of growth.

Prior to joining Blue Sky, Chris worked at Allianz Global Assistance in various roles including Global Response Centre Manager, Contact Centre Manager and Implementations Manager,  where she managed a team of project managers specialising in on-boarding new clients and products via ecommerce platforms and end to end service delivery across a wide variety of industries.

Chris is a PRINCE 2 foundation qualified Project Manager, holds an Associate Diploma in Business Management and is a Justice of the Peace.

Lachlan is based in Sydney and has joined Blue Sky to help drive the company’s next stage of growth, with a particular focus on the Blue Sky Hedge Fund business.

Vaughan specialised in the provision and distribution of investment solutions through a broad network of Financial Planners, Accountants and Family Offices.

Prior to this Vaughan worked as a financial planner providing strategic advice to high net worth investors.

Matt also assists the Investment Directors in the analysis and execution of agricultural investment opportunities.

Matt resides from a property in country NSW and has dealt with the agricultural sector through various avenues.

Prior to joining Blue Sky Investment Science in December 2007, Chris traded global futures markets for 4 years. Before that he was employed by, and completed his PhD at Bell Laboratories and its successor organisations in the United States. Tasks at Bell Labs were to perform mathematical modelling and design integrated circuits to implement forward error correction codes for communications systems.

Chris holds a Doctorate in Electronic Engineering, a Master of Business Administration, a Bachelor of Engineering (Elec., Hons), a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Mathematical and Computer Science and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Prior to Blue Sky, Sujit was Investment Manager at BioPacific Partners, where he consulted multinational companies on investing in Australasian companies in the food, agriculture and health care sectors. Prior to that Sujit was an Investment Analyst at Direct Capital for three years. In that role he gained experience in venture capital and mid-market private equity across a wide range of industries. During that time he worked closely with several portfolio companies, most notably, New Zealand Pharmaceuticals.

Sujit holds a Btech, PG Dip SCI, and M BIO Ent from Auckland University. He has published several articles on venture capital fund structure and fundraising.

Louise is responsible for the investment operations activities of the business, including deal execution and transaction management reporting of water assets; transactional settlements; and liaising with investors, service providers, regulatory bodies and brokers. Prior to Blue Sky Water Partners, Louise was Domestic Operations Manager, Business Development Manager & Grower Services Manager with Seed Technology & Marketing from 2003 to 2008.

Simon Kitson is the co-founder of Blue Sky Investment Science and is the Company’s Group Economist. Simon is also a member of Blue Sky Investment Science’s discretionary strategies team where his research and analysis of global markets is used to develop strategies for the portfolios.

Simon has 28 years of financial markets experience including 14 years with Deutsche Bank as a market and economic analyst and a combined 8 years as a portfolio manager at the Treasury Corporation of Victoria and subsequently the South Australian Government Financing Authority. At both organisations Simon had discretionary active management mandates for AUD17 billion and AUD10 billion debt portfolios respectively.

Brent prepared reports analysing the capacity of the bank’s customers to repay existing and potential loans and the bank’s likely position should they appoint receivers.

Prior to joining Blue Sky in 2016, James spent 4 years at NAB leading the Resources team in Institutional Banking for Queensland and New South Wales. During this time James worked closely with a range of leading global and Australian mining and oil and gas companies.

Prior to NAB, James was Head of Business Development at Macarthur Coal (and then Peabody Energy) and worked at BHP Billiton prior to that. These roles involved leading growth strategy, acquisitions, divestments and commercial negotiations across a range of projects.

James started his career at Macquarie Group in the Investment Banking team specialising in Infrastructure and Utilities M&A transactions. This included 4 years in Sydney and 2 years in London undertaking a range of advisory roles across the equity and debt markets.

James attended the University of Queensland where he graduated with first class honours in Civil Engineering and Commerce.

Alexander is Chief Investment Officer of Blue Sky Alternative Investments. In that capacity, Alexander sits on the investment committee in each of Blue Sky’s investing businesses (private equity and venture capital, private real estate, real assets and hedge funds), and works with the investment managers in each of these businesses evaluating the risk and return of potential investments and managing the investment process. As CIO, Alexander is also portfolio manager for the Blue Sky Alternatives Access Fund (ASX:BAF).

Alexander joined Blue Sky in 2009 as a partner in Blue Sky’s private equity business. In that capacity, Alexander was responsible for sourcing potential investments, leading due diligence, negotiating and executing transactions and managing Blue Sky’s portfolio of private equity investments.

Alexander is an executive director of Blue Sky Alternative Investments Limited (ASX:BLA).

Prior to joining Blue Sky, Alexander spent eight years at Bain & Company, a global strategy consulting firm. During his time at Bain, Alexander formulated corporate and business unit strategies, led performance improvement projects and influenced management teams to drive results, working with clients across a range of industries, including financial services, telecommunications, retail, consumer products and technology.

Simon has over 20 years of financial services experience including running multi manager hedge fund portfolios, developing bespoke products for retail and high net worth clients and executing hedge fund trading strategies. Simon began his career auditing financial services clients with Ernst & Young in Adelaide before continuing his career in San Francisco, London and Sydney where he continued to specialise in hedge fund related strategies within the investment banking arm of JPMorgan before moving into funds management.

Simon holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics, and a Bachelors Degree in Commerce, both from the University of Adelaide. He is a Chartered Accountant and also holds a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investments.

At Sovereign Nick was responsible for investing growth capital in established healthcare, IT services and business services companies to assist in their growth organically and through acquisitions.

His experience prior to private equity included working in the principal investment arm of Babcock and Brown and advising on Mergers and Acquisitions at ABN AMRO in Sydney.

Brooke also previously worked in the investment banking team at Macquarie Bank. Specialising in unlisted fund raisings, she was heavily involved in fund structuring, distribution and capital raising efforts for a number of real estate companies, including successfully establishing funds for large property development companies in India and China.

Neil Power is the Managing Director of Blue Sky’s Hedge Fund division and is responsible for its investment strategy, implementation and business development. With over 20 years working in investment markets, Neil brings considerable experience to the business.

Most recently Neil was a partner at Allen Partners providing third party marketing services to international hedge funds looking to raise capital from the Australian superannuation pool.

Prior to that Neil was the Investor Relations Manager for Boronia Capital, a Sydney based systematic CTA hedge fund. During his time at Boronia, AUM rose from $1.1bn to $3bn making it Asia’s largest CTA at the time. Assets were raised from Australian and international institutional investors including the largest global allocators to hedge funds. Previous roles include trader for Gandon Securities in Dublin, then the largest CTA in Europe, institutional futures broking with ANZ and at Bloomberg managing futures order routing products in Australia and New Zealand.

Neil holds an honours degree in Economics and a graduate diploma in business studies, both from the University College Dublin.

Robert Shand is Managing Director of Blue Sky Alternative Investments Limited, an ASX listed (ASX: BLA) alternative asset manager investing across private equity, venture capital, private real estate, water, infrastructure, hedge funds and agriculture.

Robert joined Blue Sky in 2010 as part of its private equity team where he was responsible for sourcing and executing investment opportunities, as well as managing and exiting those investments. In this capacity, Robert has served on the board of a broad range of our investee companies. Robert also played a key role in the listing of BLA in 2012.

Robert was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Blue Sky in January 2013. In that role, he was responsible for driving all aspects of the company’s growth, including playing a pivotal role in the listing of the Blue Sky Alternatives Access Fund (ASX: BAF) in June 2014. He was also responsible for all of Blue Sky’s middle and back office functions, including finance, distribution, funds administration, investor relations, marketing, HR and IT. As part of this role, he managed Blue Sky’s network of offices, including the establishment and growth of Blue Sky’s North American offices.

Prior to joining Blue Sky, Robert was a management consultant at Bain & Company working in their Sydney, Tokyo, London and Johannesburg offices. In this role, Robert advised a range of large Australian and global businesses on business strategy across a range of industries, including financial services, telecommunications, retail, consumer products, resources, and private equity.

Robert holds a Bachelor of Commerce (first class honours) and a Bachelor of Laws (first class honours) from the University of Queensland. He has also completed the Australian Institute of Company Director’s company directors’ course. Robert is married to Anna and has three children, Sophie, Rupert and Harvey.

John has 30 years of experience in financial markets. He was Head of Currency Trading for NAB and ABN-AMRO and oversaw External Trading for BankWest. Early in his career John was an IBM programmer and has vast experience developing and implementing trading models.

He works with South African based investors that want to diversify their investment portfolio’s to include Australia, also to hedge against foreign exchange fluctuations. He works with private investors, family offices, wealth advisers as well as financial institutions.

Johan holds B.Eng. (Hons) and MBA degrees from University of Pretoria, and his career has spanned various roles from engineer, project manager, management consultant and entrepreneur, to CEO. After establishing a new venture in medical insurance in South Africa in the mid nineties, he grew the business as CEO over a ten-year period, and successfully exited it before moving to Australia in 2005.

Johan visits South Africa regularly to meet with investors and their representatives.

Mark Sowerby is the Founder of Blue Sky Alternative Investments Limited, an ASX listed (ASX: BLA) alternative asset manager investing across private equity, venture capital, private real estate, water, infrastructure, hedge funds and agriculture.

Established in 2006 as a Queensland based startup, Blue Sky has invested expansion and venture capital in more than 30 Australian companies, pioneered investment in Australia’s water rights markets, and launched the world’s first listed diversified alternatives fund (ASX: BAF). In 2015, Mark received the University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence Award, was recognized as Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Queensland (listed), and completed a successful crossing of the English Channel. Mark serves on the Board of the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Racing Queensland, and was recently appointed by the Premier as Queensland’s first Chief Entrepreneur.

Mark is originally from Warren in western NSW, studying Agricultural Science at the University of Queensland before completing a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment through the Securities Institute of Australia and a Masters of Business Administration (UQ).

Elaine is the Managing Director of Venture Capital and is responsible for the management of the Blue Sky venture capital fund and portfolio. Established in 2012, the venture capital division has expanded to bear its second fund, VC2014, and over $40 million in assets under management across a broad range of industry sectors.

Elaine has worked for a number of years as a venture capitalist and management consultant to the venture and industry across Australia and the United States. As an Investment Manager at CM Capital Investments, a venture capital fund with $250 million under management and a dual focus on healthcare and digital technology, Elaine focused on investment origination, portfolio management as well as portfolio company performance. Elaine has also worked in strategic management consulting, with both NASDAQ and ASX listed and private companies based in Australia and the US.

Originally trained as a stem cell biologist, Elaine has since spent the last decade within the innovation and investment spectrum, initially in technology commercialisation assisting public institutions and founders translate and commercialise their technology across a broad range of industry sectors including agriculture, healthcare and IT.

Elaine has a strong academic foundation holding a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Adelaide. She is actively involved in Australia’s professional venture capital community, as a member of AVCALs venture capital stakeholder committee and as a member of the investment committee of ANUConnect Venture Capital, the Australian National University’s venture capital fund.

Zdravka Stepic is the Office Manager for our Blue Sky Adelaide Office.

Zdravka is responsible for back and middle office processes for the Blue Sky Hedge Fund division including reconciliation of brokerage accounts, cash controls, liaison with the Responsible Entity and administrator. Zdravka looks after investor queries for the hedge funds team and provides support to the Portfolio Managers.

Prior to joining the hedge funds team, Zdravka was employed by Mercer in their Retirement Practice Group for 13 years.

Karin Steenhuisen is the Sales and Marketing Coordinator for Blue Sky Private Real Estate.

Karin’s role is to develop, implement and project manage the sales and marketing campaigns for Blue Sky residential developments. Karin is involved from site acquisition right through to project completion and settlement. More specifically she is responsible for market research, branding, apartment design, pricing strategy, negotiation and building and maintaining a sales network.

Karin started at Blue Sky in 2011 and is very passionate about property and her role at Blue Sky.

Karin holds a Bachelor of Business Management majoring in Marketing and Masters of Property Studies from the University of Queensland.

Leyya is responsible for providing in-house legal counsel across all aspects of the business.

Prior to joining Blue Sky, Leyya worked in the mining and energy sectors advising an Australian-based mining company on a takeover bid and property acquisitions, and a global oil and gas company on securing tenure for a multi-billion dollar LNG project.

Leyya has also worked at law firm DLA Piper in the Litigation and Regulatory team, and as a Judge’s Associate in the District Court of Queensland.

Leyya has a Bachelor of Laws from Queensland University of Technology and was admitted as a solicitor in 2008.

Alex is the Head of International Distribution for Blue Sky Hedge Funds, based in New York and is responsible for building the business globally.  

 

Alex originally joined Blue Sky in 2014 to establish a Distribution presence in Sydney.  With more than 12 years’ experience in the funds management industry, Alex’s recent focus has been raising capital on behalf of domestic and international asset managers  across alternative assets, equities, currencies and bonds.  Alex has extensive experience working with institutional investors including many large global allocators to hedge funds.  Prior to this, Alex has held investment management roles with MLC and National Australia Bank. 

 

Alex holds a Masters of Business from UTS (Funds Management) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of Queensland.

Before joining Blue Sky Investment Science, Huan was employed by IBM for 11 years as a Software Engineer, where he was involved in the design and development of a number of IT Applications for clients ranging from Telstra through to the NAB.

Matthew Whyte is the Chief Financial Officer at Blue Sky Alternative Investments where he leads the finance team. His responsibilities include financial and management accounting, board reporting, budgeting and forecasting, tax and compliance, and assisting in the development of new funds and investment products.

Before joining Blue Sky, Matthew was the Compliance Manager at the global pharmaceutical company LEO Pharma, where he focused on post-merger tax and accounting reorganisation issues. Prior to this role, Matthew was a Manager at leading professional services firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he specialised in tax and managed the day-to-day accounting functions for Australian subsidiaries of foreign-listed multinationals.

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Queensland, is a Chartered Accountant (CA) and is currently undertaking a Masters of Applied Finance.

Tim Wilson is the Managing Director of Blue Sky Private Equity and is responsible for leading the private equity team, sourcing and negotiating deals, advising portfolio companies, driving exits, and building the Blue Sky network. Tim is a director of Lenard’s Chicken, Viking Rentals, Oak Tree, Firewire and Enthalpy. In addition, Tim is an observer to the boards of Q Energy, Beach Burrito Company and OICS.

In addition Tim sits on the board of Blue Sky Alternative Investments Limited, Blue Sky Private Equity’s ASX listed parent entity.

Tim has worked in private equity for the last fifteen years through investment banking roles in London, Sydney and Brisbane. He began his career as a commercial lawyer in Brisbane with Minter Ellison before moving to London where he lived for seven years, working in investment banking roles with Paribas and Credit Suisse First Boston. Tim then returned to Australia and worked in finance roles with Babcock & Brown, Westpac Institutional Bank and Investec before joining Blue Sky in 2009 to run the private equity group.

Tim holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland, a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment, and a Master of Science in Finance from the London Business School. He has also undertaken the Private Equity and Venture Capital course at Harvard Business School, Boston, USA.

Todd joined Blue Sky Water Partners in 2013 and works closely with the Investment Director (Managing Director) in water market and investment portfolio analysis; assisting in the determination of the investment portfolio, water entitlement purchasing, and water allocation sales strategy; the execution of water entitlement and allocation trades; contract administration; maintaining portfolio positions and portfolio reporting.

Todd also assists the Investment Directors in the analysis and execution of agricultural investment opportunities.

Adam has extensive experience in real estate strategy, investment, asset management and development. He possesses a unique blend of both private and public sector experience having previously worked for leading Investment Banks Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, as well as within the investment arm of Australia’s largest local government body.

With qualifications including a Bachelor of Business (Distinction), Bachelor of Law (Honours), and Masters of Applied Finance, Adam possesses a strong and diverse academic foundation.

Prior to joining Blue Sky Arron was a financial analyst of FP&A team working at IHG Hotels and Resort Group Greater China Region. He and his team were in charge of the financial reporting, rolling forecast and budgeting of this region, overseeing the performance of more than 220 hotels

Arron holds a Master degree of Applied Commerce (accounting) from the University of Melbourne and Bachelor of Statistics from the University of Xiamen, is a Chartered Accountant.

Ainslee is the Funds Administrator at Blue Sky and is part of the Investor Services team.   Ainslee is responsible for reporting and administrative matters relating to our Funds.

Prior to joining Blue Sky Ainslee worked at Anglo American for 4 years as a Project Administrator during the construction of the Grosvenor Mine, a $2 billion greenfield underground metallurgical coal project in Moranbah Queensland.

Before her time at Anglo, Ainslee was employed by Wilson HTM Investment Group for ten years in various roles including  Investment Adviser whereby she provided investment advice around direct equity investments for retail clients including superannuation and other asset classes.

Ainslee holds an Diploma of Financial Markets, Associate Diploma of Business and is RG146 Compliant.
